RB+: The Dynamic Estimation of the Opponent's Strength

چکیده

In this paper we consider the Reibman and Ballard algorithm for two-agent search problems and its special relevance for dealing with imperfect players. We describe it and study its weaknesses, namely the problem of pre-determining the strength of the opponent. To deal with this, we present an extension of the algorithm that dynamically adapts its play according to the skills shown by the opponent. We then apply the resulting algorithm to the game of hawaiian checkers. Other strategies are brought up, namely some minimax-derived approaches, in order to supply opponents against which we can test our algorithm. Results of these tests are presented before we draw our conclusions concerning the validity of the dynamic approach to the estimation of the opponent's strength.
